Below are hiking areas near the Lakehouse where you can spend hours hiking on heathland, through forest over sand and with fens and lakes. With or without a dog; enjoy!

Zuidlaardermeer
The Zuidlaardermeer, no off-leash area (leash requirement) but within walking distance of the house so definitely worth mentioning.

Nature reserve Appelbergen (Glimmen) (Groningen) - about 4 km
A great forest. Dogs are allowed to run loose in several places, such as at the sand drift in the middle of the forest (follow the trail).

Adriaan Tripbos (Sappemeer) (Groningen) - about 6 km.
The northern part of this forest is a off-leash area in the rest there is a leash requirement.

Strubben-Kniphorstbosch (Schipborg) (Drenthe) - about 9 km.
A nature reserve, part of the Drentse Aa a small part is designated as a stray area.

The Wet Noses route from De Heemtuin (Muntendam) (Groningen) - about 9 km.
A few kilometers of this area is specifically for dogs. The power grids border a protected area where many birds nest on the ground and sheep run loose.

Check the website before you go here because there are more opportunities from October through March.

Dogs are allowed to run loose in this forest all year round. It is a small city park.

Dogs are allowed to run loose here all year round and also swim in the pond.

Recreation area Heeresveld (Nieuwe Pekela) (Groningen) - about 16 kmvDogsare allowed to run loose in this area from October 1 to April 1. They may then also swim in Lake Heeres.

Maybe not really close but this is really not to be missed. Great to get lost here and explore everything.

The Steendammer Ommetje (Steendam) (Groningen) - about 17 km
This is a 6 km walking route. Dogs are allowed off-leash unless otherwise indicated. At Steendam, you can walk through the Steendammerbos, and the Schildmeer is only a loose-leash area between Sept. 30 and April 15.

Gietenerveld (Gieten) (Drenthe) - about 17 km
The Gietenerveld is part of Boswachterij Gieten-Borger. The forest area with moors and fens on the southwest side is dog walking area.

In this beautiful forest dogs are allowed to run loose in a large part, except for the part where Scottish Highlanders walk.

Near Gieten is a lake where you can have a great walk with the dog and also swim.

Pekelder Bos (Oude Pekela) (Groningen) - about 19 km
Staatsbosbeheer has designated the forest on the south side of Oude Pekela as an off-leash area. The area is not that big but there is a small lake where your dog can have a nice swim.

Baggelhuizerplas (Assen/Witten) (Drenthe) where in a large part dogs are allowed to run loose all year round and there is a special beach for dogs

Blijhamsterbos (Blijham) (Groningen)

Boswachterij Grolloo in Drenthe with forest, heath and fens

Forestry Hooghalen/Meeuwenplas in Drenthe with again lots of water and heaths (this is near Camp Westerbork)

Hart van Drenthe nature reserve where dogs are allowed to run loose all year round and can swim in a fen

Boswachterij Exloo (Hondsrug) with a few large off-leash areas where dogs are allowed off-leash all year round but be alert because there is also a lot of wildlife here
